Moving line (Dong Yao)

Moving line (Dong Yao) — what is it? A Moving line appears while casting or taking a hexagram; at each moving position a changed line appears, and the hexagram gets a changed hexagram.

As a concept, a Moving line is a line that appears in the course of casting or taking a hexagram. At each moving position a changed line appears to match it, and a hexagram with moving lines gets a corresponding changed hexagram.

The changed hexagram

At each moving position, a Yang in the primary hexagram becomes a Yin in the changed hexagram, and the other way round. A moving line acts actively and directly on the other lines of the hexagram.

Example

Example: The Creative (Qian) moving at line 2, changing into Fellowship (Tong Ren):

The Creative (Qian) changes to Fellowship (Tong Ren) Heaven (Qian) Palace · Metal
Parents Xu Earth Self
Siblings Shen Metal
Officer line Wu Fire
Parents Chen Earth Resp.
Wealth Yin Wood Parents · Chou Earth
Offspring Zi Water

Becomes:

Fellowship (Tong Ren) Fire (Li) Palace · Fire
Offspring Xu Earth Resp.
Wealth Shen Metal
Siblings Wu Fire
Officer line Hai Water Self
Offspring Chou Earth
Parents Mao Wood

Several moving lines

A moving line acts directly on all the other lines; but if there are several moving lines, the moving lines interact with one another first, before acting on any other line of the hexagram, by the formula for several moving lines given in the Appendix.
